Woodland Staff

Senior Minister
Rev. Dalene Vasbinder

E-address: pastor@woodlandchristianlex.org

Rev. Dalene Vasbinder came to Woodland Christian Church in the spring of 2009 after serving as a pastor in Seattle, Washington for almost 20 years. Even though her move to Lexington was major, it was, in a sense, like coming home. Dalene grew up in Columbus, Indiana, was a member of North Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and attended Hanover College on the banks of the Ohio River. Little did she know as she gazed out over the river at Kentucky that it would one day be home!

Dalene graduated from Hanover College with double majors in International Studies and Spanish. Directly after college she spent a year in Washington, D.C. as an intern for a non-profit where she learned that she loved the city but did not care for the fast pace of congressional lobbying on the Hill. Her life then turned 180 degrees when she volunteered at Jubilee Partners, a Christian Community in the small rural town of Comer, Georgia. There that she was introduced to the story of refugees from Central America, something that directed the rest of her life's journey. After a year at Jubilee Partners, she traveled to El Salvador, working for two years as a Global Mission Intern of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in a camp for displaced people south of San Salvador.

After her life changing experience in El Salvador, Dalene returned to the United States to attend seminary at Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California. She married Ken McCullough in May of 1990 and moved to Seattle, Washington then was ordained the following year. Dalene and Ken have four children; Matt and Mina McCullough, Dalene's step children, and Nathan and Kaylen McCullough. In addition, their family household in Lexington includes a faithful golden retriever, Jasper, and eight chickens!

Church and keeping up with two active teens takes up most of Dalene's time these days. However, in her spare moments she enjoys gardening, walking in the woods or on the beach and good books/movies. She has been active in the Interfaith Alliance of the Bluegrass and has a heart for mission and social justice work.
